Eagle Scout Safeguards Bluebirds from Raccoons and Cats

January 11, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The New Quarter Trail is one of four trails in our area that is monitored by members of the Historic Rivers Chapter, Virginia Master Naturalists (www.historicrivers.org). In 2011, 23 members of the chapter devoted 553 hours to monitoring the trails and bluebird boxes located in the park. The nesting and fledgling information gathered became part of a citizen science research database maintained by the Virginia Bluebird Society (www.virginiabluebirds.org). Recently, young area resident Chris Puffenbarger made and attached raccoon guards to 19 bluebird boxes at New Quarter Park as part of his Eagle Scout project. These guards will protect bluebird eggs and chicks from hungry raccoons and house cats.

In the photo, scout Chris Puffenbarger is shown at right with the following: Sara Lewis, Master Naturalist and New Quarter Park interpreter; Lois Ullman, Master Naturalist; Molly Nealer, York County Recreation Supervisor; and Jan Lockwood, Master Naturalist. Mrs. Ullman and Mr. Puffenbarger each hold a bluebird house with the raccoon/cat guards attached.

For more information, call the York County Parks and Recreation Office at 890-3500 or visit www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec.
