Holiday fun at the York County Library

All aboard the Polar Express! Come in your coziest pajamas and watch "The Polar Express" at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, in the Tabb Library meeting room.
 
Based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg, the movie stars Tom Hanks and is rated G. Running time is 100 minutes. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served. This activity is free and recommended for ages five and up. Registration is not required.
 
Join us for a special Holiday Story Time on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Tabb Library or 1 p.m. at the Yorktown Library. Enjoy holiday stories, songs and a craft. Also, a short movie will be shown at the Tabb Library. This activity is free and recommended for ages three and up. Registration is not required.

Senior Center of York Announces December Events

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in December. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Center is closed all county holidays. Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, stop by the Center or call 898-3807.  For more information, please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/communityservices.
 
Senior Center of York Holiday Luncheon, Friday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  You may call us at 898-3807 to see if there is any space available for this program. The event will include a merry time with good friends, food, and music. The menu will consist of lasagna, Caesar salad, breadsticks, dessert, and beverage. The fee for this event will be $3.
 
Make Colorful Holiday Jewelry, Monday, December 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Facilitator Gail Eldred will give instructions on making a red, green, purple, or gold 30 inch glass beaded necklace with colorful threads. Create one for yourself or a loved one just in time for the holidays. A sample will be at the front desk.  The fee is $15. Space is limited. For more information and to register for this program, please call 898-3807.
       
AARP Driver Safety Program, December 5 & December 6. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, December 5 from 12:30 – 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, December 6 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is now $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members.Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
 
Breakfast, Tree-Trimming, and Singing, Thursday, December 8
Come enjoy a Hardee's biscuit at 9:30 a.m. followed by tree decorating along with a lively and festive concert by Seaford Elementary School Choir at 10:30 a.m. Please register by December 7.
 
2011 Senior Center Art Exibit at the Gallery at York Hall through December 12. Visit the Gallery at York Hall located on Main Street in Yorktown to see the wonderful displays and exhibits of Center crafters.          
Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, December 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful holiday cards and assists you with your scrapbook. These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for your loved ones. Note: Please limit to four cards. For more information and to register, please call 898-3807 by December 9.  
     
 Dinner and Celebration of Lights Holiday Trip, Monday, December 12.  Join us for a "dutch treat" dinner trip to a local restaurant and a ride through the two-mile Festival of Lights display at Newport News Park.  The bus will depart the Senior Center at 4 p.m. Bus seating is limited, but you can drive yourself and we can provide the tickets to enter the lights display. To register call the Senior Center at 898-3807 by December 9.
 
Canned Goods. For the early part of December, please bring in current canned goods to help support the York County Church Women United Emergency Food Closet. We will accept items through December 15. 
 
Holly Jolly Birthday Bash, Friday, December 16 at 1 p.m. Join in on the fun of this bash. We will play holiday games, trivia, and do some caroling. There will be a chance to win some great prizes too. November and December birthdays will be celebrated. But as always, you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to attend.   Cake and beverage will be served.  Please register by calling the Center at 898-3807.  
 
Design a Bookmark, Monday, December 19 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Patron Laurel Vander Jeugdt will assist in making eye-catching bookmarks from holiday and standard greeting cards which will be laminated and tasseled.  Please register at the front desk for this program.
 
Computer General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. Currently, classes are held on Tuesdays in the lab. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk. Please call us beginning Tuesday, January 3 for upcoming computer classes.   
 
December Trips with the Historic Triangle Center in Williamsburg:
Mt. Vernon Trip, Saturday, December 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. What could be more enjoyable then to travel by coach to the beautifully decorated Mt. Vernon, the home of our first President, George Washington, near Washington, D.C.? Gala luncheon consisting of ham, fried chicken, or meat loaf, cherry or apple pie will be served.  For more information on registration, space, and fees, please call the Center at 898-3807.
"Last Minute Christmas Shopping" at Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, Tuesday, December 13. For more details on registration, space, and fees, please call the Center at 898-3807 or drop by the front desk.
NOTE: For the holidays, the Senior Center of York will be CLOSED Friday, December 23, Monday, December 26, Friday, December 30, and Monday, January 2, 2012.
